As some of you might know (prolly not ), I am doing an MA in book and digital media studies. For one of my subjects, publishing studies, we need to write a paper on something related to the publishing industry. I am going to write this on online publishing and how people can get their ideas and stories and information to their readers without needing a publisher. So, for this paper, I would like to make a small questionaire (sp?) for people who write and put this online! It will mainly deal with your views on publishing and whether you are satisfied with just putting things and ideas online. I still need to make it, but if you are willing to fill this in for me- please reply ^.^ Thanks so much!

ooho creative writing, that sounds like fun! =D I wish they'd offer BA programs like that here, but alas...
Anyway, here it is! Please try to answer as complete as possible (so if your answer is yes, or no, please explain why =) )
Are you currently writing a story or something else that might be published in book form (a website with information on a topic, for example a site like my rainbow forest, counts too!) on the internet? If so, are you satisfied with this kind of publishing? Meaning, are you happy the way you can bring your ideas to your readers?
Have you ever looked into publishing in book form? Why or why not?
What do you think are the advantages of putting your stories/ideas online?
Do you think that in the future more things will be net-only? If so, do you see a role for publishers in this?
Do you think the function of publishers will change in the near future?

Are you currently writing a story or something else that might be published in book form (a website with information on a topic, for example a site like my rainbow forest, counts too!) on the internet? If so, are you satisfied with this kind of publishing? Meaning, are you happy the way you can bring your ideas to your readers? Yes, I write fanfiction for various fandoms and post it on the internet. I'm quite happy with posting these stories on the internet, as they're easy for people to find thanks to such sites as fanfiction.net.
Have you ever looked into publishing in book form? Why or why not? Well, I'd definitely like to get some original fiction, or even funny, satirical memoirs, published someday, and my dream job is to become a book editor, so I have a good idea of the basic editing/publishing process. I haven't actually looked into it yet, though, as I have nothing to publish. Fanfic doesn't count.
What do you think are the advantages of putting your stories/ideas online? Well, before computers became big, fanzines were used to publish fanfiction instead of the internet, but those would take money to print and mail out. The internet is perfect for fanfiction--it's totally free for both writers and readers, it's a lot easier to find what you're looking for, and it's easier to get more readers for your stories. With just a few clicks of the mouse and typing of keys, people from all over the world can easily find your story!
Do you think that in the future more things will be net-only? If so, do you see a role for publishers in this? That's a good question. Frankly, I'm not sure. The internet IS a great resource, so it won't surprise me if lots of things get published online. We've already got those Kindle things you can download books on. At the same time, though, there's something about a good, solid book that makes stories much more personal. So while some things--self-help books, how-to books, travel books, things like that--could very well become net-only, I think that things like fiction could very well stay on paper.
Do you think the function of publishers will change in the near future? Well, I don't know. I guess if this Kindle thing catches on, publishers will have to change so they can promote their downloads or something. At the same time, though, I can't see the Kindle or online publishing becoming very big very fast, so even if publishers DO change functions, it won't be in the near future.

I'm too lazy to write anykind of sory or fanfiction, but I really like to read fanfictions and write my opinian about them. I think the internet publishing has a good and a bit bad side: The good: The readers can write their oppinien about the story even before it completly finished. The bad side: Some pople write wery bad critic about some fanfictions whic can hurt the writer.

here is my response.
Are you currently writing a story or something else that might be published in book form (a website with information on a topic, for example a site like my rainbow forest, counts too!) on the Internet? If so, are you satisfied with this kind of publishing? Meaning, are you happy the way you can bring your ideas to your readers?
Lets see now. I have a novel due out in June called Murder Hotel. I like to hold an actual book in my hands when I read over reading something on the Internet. So far, I have fan fiction published on Fanfiction.net and I have Kingdom Lost on its own website. Publishing things on the net is easier and cheaper for some people like myself who just don't have the funds necessary to publish something. I currently pay a web host to host my site once a year at a low price. I like being able to write and post it online where other people can enjoy my writing. In fact, Kingdom Lost started out in a series of writing tablets done by me and a few friends back before the Internet became popular. We published a section of Kingdom Lost in book form weekly and sold them during lunch to our classmates. the funds went to the school to pay for paper and ink for the printer and copier. With what was left, we used to buy new tablets and pencils when needed. Kingdom Lost became very popular by both girls and boys alike. Even today, I recieve Emails from my former classmates who are so overjoyed to find the story they loved back in school online. The school has even used Kingdom Lost as a teaching aid because kids love it so much. Kingdom Lost even had its own fanfiction writen about it. now, with the Internet, It is easier and lots cheaper to publish for other students, new and old, to enjoy.
Have you ever looked into publishing in book form? Why or why not?
Murder Hotel is going to be published in book form, and when I first started looking into getting it published, it was hard. I didn't have the funds and most of the publishers rejected the novel because of my lack of funding and the fact it is my first novel. I met and talked to several authors who recomended a really good publisher who is now working with me on getting my novel out there. We have decided to start slowly by offering the novel for sell on Amazon.com only. what happens next depends on how well the novel does. I don't expect New York Best Seller list status, or even the Pultizer Award for Murder Hotel, but I do hope I can sell up to 1000 copies.
What do you think are the advantages of putting your stories/ideas online?
Well, it is a lot cheaper for one thing. With each copy of Murder Hotel sold, I'll make fifty cents because the cost to publish is 10.50$ and each book is going to sell for 11 dollars. another advantage with online publishing is how easy it is. I can write and publish a chapter of Kingdom Lost with the push of a button.
Do you think that in the future more things will be net-only? If so, do you see a role for publishers in this?
I think books will always be around because not everyone can afford the internet. Some of my friends still don't have internet and often come over to my place to use the net. My sister and her husband don't have internet ether and they often come by to use my internet. as long as we publish something, there will always be publishers. Publishers may change to online sites to publish your novel and I can see how they might sell you the novel as a download for you to read.
Do you think the function of publishers will change in the near future?
Publishers might turn novels into downloads and into CD form that you can buy to read on your computer. We might see DVD novels you can read on your T.V. We will still need publishers to publish our novels as long as we can still write.

Pssst.....BrightGlow, it'd probably be easier for her if you answered her questions one at a time. Like Sunny and me. Aienhime's probably going to have to make things very specific in her paper, with, like, quotes and stuff, so she's going to need to show exactly who answered what to which question. ^_~
Aienhime, sorry if I'm out of place here... ^_^"
